Baseball, or pelota as most Dominicans usually call it, is the most widely practiced sport in the Dominican Republic.

Thanks to the country’s favorable climate, baseball is played year-round at the amateur level. However, the official professional season—featuring top-level professional players—takes place during the fall and winter months (from October to February).

Popular Sports in La Romana

In addition to baseball, considered the national sport by most Dominicans, other sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, athletics, boxing, swimming, and others are also widely practiced.

BASEBALL

Baseball in La Romana, Dominican Republic, has a strong tradition and is one of the most beloved and widely practiced sports in the region.

La Romana is home to an important baseball venue, Francisco Micheli Stadium, which hosts the Tigres del Licey, one of the most popular teams in the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM), as well as the Toros del Este, the local team that also competes in the same league.

ATHLETICS

GOLF

Golf is one of the most prominent sports in La Romana, especially due to the presence of luxury resorts such as Casa de Campo & Villas, considered one of the best golf destinations in the world thanks to its impressive design and spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

The golf courses at Casa de Campo, which host international tournaments at both professional and amateur levels, are renowned for their natural beauty, challenging layouts, and high-quality facilities, making the region a key destination for golfers.

TENNIS

Although tennis is not as widely practiced as baseball or basketball in the region, La Romana offers good sports facilities and complexes with tennis courts, where local tournaments are held.

Thanks to the creation of academies and training programs in various sports complexes—such as Casa de Campo and other private clubs—tennis has gained popularity among young people in La Romana.
