The Museum of the Virgin of Altagracia was inaugurated in 1971 with the purpose of preserving and exhibiting the religious, cultural and historical heritage related to the devotion to the Virgin of Altagracia, patron saint of the country.

It is part of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Cathedral Basilica complex, one of the most important religious temples in the Dominican Republic and a place of pilgrimage for thousands of the faithful every year.

In 2021, the museum was renovated and reopened under the name of Museo de la Altagracia Alejandro E. Grullón E., in honor of its founder, businessman and banker Alejandro E. Grullón Espaillat, who was a fervent devotee of the Virgin and a great promoter of the cultural and religious development of the region.

The museum was designed by architect Pedro Borrell, the art and museology research was carried out by Sergio Barbieri and the museography by Carlos León and Jorge Ruiz.

The 6 rooms of the museum narrate the history of the Virgin of Altagracia: from her arrival in the Dominican Republic in the 16th century to her coronation and the imposing construction of the Basilica.

The remodeling of the museum included the modernization of its facilities and the expansion of its collection, with a more interactive and accessible museography for visitors.

The museum is a cultural center that provides an enriching vision of the history and traditions of the Dominican people.
