The National District is the capital of the Dominican Republic, created as a province on September 7, 1934 under Law No. 745; divided by Law No. 163-01, dated October 16, 2001, into two different demarcations, the National District and the province of Santo Domingo.

It currently has a territorial extension of 91.58 km², bordered to the north by the Duarte Highway, up to Km.13 and the Isabela River; to the east by the Ozama River and the municipality of Santo Domingo East; to the south by the Caribbean Sea and to the west by the municipality of Santo Domingo West.

According to the Köppen climate classification, Santo Domingo in the National District of the Dominican Republic has a tropical monsoon climate, which is characterized by relatively constant temperatures throughout the year, with an average annual temperature of about 25ºC.

The warmest months are July and August, with average maximum temperatures of around 32ºC. and minimum temperatures of 23ºC.

The coolest months are December and January, with average temperatures of 29ºC. and minimum temperatures of 20ºC. The average annual rainfall in Distrito Nacional is 1,500 mm. of rain, with the months between January and April being the driest season, while the rainiest season extends from May to November.

The tropical trade winds help mitigate the heat and humidity throughout the year, providing a much more pleasant climate even in the hottest months.

In summary, it can be said that the National District in Santo Domingo experiences a warm and constant temperature throughout the year, with a rainy season between May and November, and moderate humidity thanks to the trade winds.

Characteristics of trade winds

Trade winds are winds that blow steadily from December to mid-September. They blow from east to west in tropical regions, between approximately 30º north and south latitude.

They are caused by the Earth’s rotation and uneven heating of the atmosphere.

These winds blow throughout the year, helping to regulate the tropical climate by cooling the weather by dissipating heat and humidity, making temperatures much more bearable.
