What tree species are in Pico Duarte?

In Pico Duarte, due to its altitude and cold climate, there are several species of trees adapted to these conditions.

The flora is very varied and changes according to the altitude. We find from tropical forests in the lower areas to pine forests and species more adapted to the mountain in the higher areas.

Some of the tree species that can be found in this area are:

  • Creole pine (Pinus occidentalis): It is one of the most representative trees of the area, especially at higher altitudes. It is a species of pine that grows in the mountainous forests of the Cordillera Central and can withstand the extreme cold of the mountains. In this area it is also common to find: mosses and lichens, mountain ferns, cold-resistant grasses, small wild flowers…
  • Oak (Quercus spp.): Found in higher altitudes, between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level. They are a common species in the humid forests of the region.
  • Cedar (Cedrela odorata): Its presence is very uncommon at higher elevations as it prefers lower altitudes and warm, humid climates.
  • Yagua (Corypha utan): It is a species that adapts to low intermediate altitudes, so they are not very common at the heights of Pico Duarte.
  • Laurel (Prunus spp.): There are several species of laurel in the region, which are usually found in the humid forest areas, but not in the higher elevations.
  • Guaiacán (Guaiacum officinale): This tropical tree between 5 and 12 meters, with hard and valuable wood, is not very common in high mountains of Pico Duarte, but is found in some areas of the park, especially in the drier and sunnier areas.
  • Chestnut tree (Castanea spp.): In some lower altitude areas, chestnut trees can be found, which are important for their edible fruit.
  • Sierra palm (Sabal domingensis): This type of palm up to 15 meters high is also common in some areas of the National Park, in the lower parts where the climate is warmer and drier.
  • Green Ebony: Endemic tree of the Dominican Republic, considered one of the rarest and most valuable species of the island.

The biodiversity of trees on Pico Duarte is impressive, with a mixture of species that adapt to the different altitudes and climatic conditions, making the natural landscape even richer and more diverse.

In general, the flora of Pico Duarte is a combination of tropical, subtropical and mountain species, which makes it unique and special.

Many of these plants are endemic to the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, which highlights the importance of conserving this ecosystem.
