Punta Cana Safari

Lémur de Punta Cana

Punta Cana, a wonderful and spectacular tourist city located on the eastern end of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Altagracia.

The Punta Cana area has beaches of fine white sand and crystalline turquoise blue waters.

Tourism is the main attraction of Punta Cana with a wide range of resorts that receive both local and international visitors throughout the year.

Organizing a safari-type excursion through the heart of the Dominican Republic will allow tourists to enjoy a totally different kind of vacation that is not only about sun and beach.

Enjoy getting to know the rural life of the inhabitants of Punta Cana, enjoy the nature and fauna that surrounds Punta Cana while observing the impressive and spectacular views offered by the landscapes, from a comfortable safari truck.

Safari with native animals in Punta Cana

The Dominican countryside has a great variety of fauna and flora, and the best way to get to know it is to take a tour of the area in a panoramic safari truck.

A relaxing horseback ride is another way to enjoy the scenery, the lush tropical forest where you can see mango trees, avocado trees, and other varieties typical of the area, getting to feel like a true local of the area.

Regarding the animals that the tourist will be able to meet when touring the area, it will depend on the place visited, since each area has its own habitat.

Animals to see in Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic is a country full of life and enjoyment whether inside or outside the hotel complex, by land or by sea, and in both flora and fauna.

Punta Cana’s resorts boast of knowing how to maintain that precious balance, creating wonderful and spectacular tropical gardens full of flowers and animals to enjoy: striking flamingos, male peacocks opening their spectacular tails to court the females, beautiful iguanas, etc.

Since diving is the activity that arouses the most interest in every tourist, in addition to the animals already mentioned, we find other types of animals to photograph during your vacation in Punta Cana: manatees, dolphins, sharks, manta rays, hawksbill turtles, barracudas…

MANATIS

Manatees are very calm, large mammals, reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing several tons.

They are also known as sea cows and spend the day foraging for plants in shallow areas.

DOLPHINS

One of the most beautiful, fun, playful and friendly animals in Punta Cana that every tourist likes to observe and admire are the dolphins, and it is well known their great intelligence and ability to interact with people.

Although they are carnivorous animals , it is very unlikely that they will attack humans. It is true that sometimes even if they are playing they can hit us and hurt us; that is why it is advisable to observe them at a prudent distance and to remain calm at all times if they approach us.

It is important to remember that dolphins are wild animals and that any gesture that they notice as a threat may cause them to change their calm and collected nature.

In the Bávaro Punta Cana area there are several centers that offer the possibility of swimming with dolphins in pools, a plan that will please both children and adults.

If you prefer to swim with them in the open sea, you can hire different companies that offer the possibility to do so.

SHARKS

he temperature of the waters throughout the Punta Cana area makes sharks frequent in the area.

The fact that there are different species does not mean that the numbers of sharks are high, so in the main tourist areas there is no risk of shark attack in the bathing area, as most of the species behave like any other fish, fleeing from the staff.

Among the different varieties of sharks that can be found on the beaches of Punta Cana, we highlight the whale shark that can reach more than 15 meters in length, the cat shark, the reef shark, the tiger shark or the bull shark, etc.

If you are interested in diving with sharks, take a look at our safe and fun excursion.

MANTARRAYAS

At the bottom of the ocean we find giant manta rays, flattened fish that have cartilage instead of bones and are often confused with rays.

The manta rays are accustomed to the presence of people, so you can enjoy their presence and take some fun photos in total tranquility.

CAREY TURTLE

The hawksbill turtle, recognizable by its pointed beak and saw-shaped edges of its shell, is one of the animals that is protected in sanctuaries trying to recover its numbers.

They live in very shallow waters, and although they are migratory, they return here to lay their eggs.

BARRACUDAS

Barracudas, also known as “the tiger of the seas“, are a genus of carnivorous fish with an elongated shape and almost 2 meters long, they live in deep waters and attack their prey very quickly.

Generally they do not attack fishermen or divers, but usually swim around divers observing their movement. However, it is advisable that the diver does not wear jewelry, as it may create confusion and attack thinking that it is food.

WHALES

Samana beach is the best area to see whales, especially between the months of December and March where, due to the climate and temperature of the waters, the whales come there to mate and give birth to their own calves.

If you are organizing a trip to the Dominican Republic you probably do not even know where to start, so we advise you to contact a travel company to organize the trip so that your only concern is to enjoy a beautiful and unforgettable vacation in the Caribbean.
