The Virgin of Altagracia and her places

LA VIRGEN DE LA ALTAGRACIA Y SUS LUGARES

The Virgin of Altagracia, patroness and spiritual protector of the Dominican Republic, is a Marian invocation – a special representation of the Virgin Mary – deeply venerated in the country.

Her devotion is one of the most deeply rooted in Dominican culture. Every January 21, thousands of faithful flock to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Altagracia, the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey, to pay homage to her and thank her for the miracles and blessings received.

The image of the Virgin is an oil painting from the 16th century, which shows Mary with a serene gesture, leaning towards the Child Jesus, with Saint Joseph in the background. Currently, this painting of the Virgin of Altagracia is located inside the Marian temple in Higüey, where it is permanently venerated.

History of the Virgin of Altagracia

What is the history of the Virgin of Altagracia? It is intimately linked to the faith of the Dominican people and their devotion to the Virgin Mary.

According to tradition, the Virgin of Altagracia appeared for the first time in Higüey. A Spanish man who lived in this region had a daughter who was very devoted to the Virgin. She asked him for an image of the Virgin of Altagracia and, although he was unaware of this dedication, he promised to find it.

After a long search, a mysterious old man gave him a painting depicting the scene of the Nativity of Jesus. Upon his return to Higüey, the image was placed in a small church. Soon miraculous events began to occur: the image disappeared and was found under an orange tree. This place was interpreted as sacred and a sanctuary was built there to venerate it.

As time went by, the devotion was consolidated and in 1971 the current Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey was inaugurated. This temple is one of the places where the Virgin of Altagracia is venerated and one of the most important cathedrals dedicated to her in the Caribbean.
