Castillo del Cerro
San Cristobal Hill is a hill located in the province of San Cristobal, an important landmark in the area, known for its historical and strategic value.
On this hill is the Castillo del Cerro, a historic structure located in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, a majestic building built in 1949 for the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo and his family, as a fortress and security residence.
This 5-story building with different styles, with a facade very similar to the bow of a ship and areas decorated as a replica of the halls of the National Palace of Santo Domingo, it is said that it was not a suitable house for Trujillo and his family, rather it looked like a madhouse with rooms decorated in baroque style very overloaded with elements and figures.
Due to its location on a hill, it is said that Trujillo used this building as a strategic refuge and lookout point, as it provided him with a privileged view of his surroundings.
Today, the Cerro de San Cristobal and its castle are places of tourist and historical interest that are part of the legacy of the Trujillo era in the Dominican Republic.
The walls of the castle are made of pink and green marble, granite stairs, mahogany doors, the elements of its 18 bathrooms and the furniture of the chapel are completely original. The space destined to the catholic rites and its elements such as the tabernacle, confessional and pew are also preserved intact.
Today this wonderful place and site of historical interest, is the Training Center of Agents of Surveillance and Penitentiary Treatment, open to the public where visits can be made.
