What it takes to get married in Punta Cana
Punta Cana offers to any citizen of any part of the world the possibility to celebrate their union under the laws of the Dominican Republic.
The nationality of the future couple is not a determining factor, so it is possible to celebrate the marriage between a foreigner and a Dominican or between two foreign citizens, without the need to apply for residence permits or to carry out complex procedures.
Once you have chosen where the ceremony will be held, the day and the Civil Judge who will officiate the marriage ceremony, it will be time to prepare the required documentation:
- Birth certificate of each party to the marriage: If it is a foreign document it must be duly translated, apostilled or legalized, if the country of origin of the document is not part of the Hague Apostille agreement.
- Affidavit of Single Status duly apostilled.
- Photocopy of valid passport.
- Photocopy of ID card.
Prior to arrival in the Dominican Republic, all documentation must be translated and certified by the Dominican Consulate, with the exception of passports.
The Dominican Consulate has the obligation to certify the documents in a period of less than 3 months, taking as reference the date of the wedding. It will also be necessary to pay the applicable fees to the OficialÃa del Estado Civil.

If the judge is not informed by default, the marriage will be declared in Community of Property and Community of Profits.
- The Dominican Republic does not perform same-sex marriages.
With respect to the celebration, the attendance of 2 witnesses and 2 godparents, both with National Identity Cards, is required.
Once the celebration is over, the Civil Registry Office will issue a Certificate of Marriage Certificate to the couple, which must be apostilled at the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to be valid abroad.
